Isheyevo Meteorite Thin Section

The Isheyevo Meteorite is categorized as a CH/CBb Bencubbin-like type meteorite. It contains FeNi grains, C, POP, rare BO chondrules, chondrule fragments, CAIs, and matrix lumps. The polarized image seen here shows a central elongated structure with polarized features, while the remaining areas show vast areas of black matrix material. It reminds one of the Milky Way winding its way through the night sky.

Google maps seems to show a spelling of Isheevo, or in Russian: Ишеево

Sahara 99544 Meteorite Thin Section

Sahara 99544

Thin section specimen of Sahara 99544 Meteorite seen in polarized light with a 1/4 wave retarder. Being a type CO3, there is an abundance of small diameter chondrules and olivine aggregates. In Norton’s The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites CO type chondrites are compared with CV type chondrites. Compare SAH 99544 with Allende, which is type CV. CO chondrules are on average 15% the size of CV chondrules. CO type specimens contain about half the volume percentage of CAIs when compared to the CV class.

NWA 5426 Meteorite Thin Section

Cross polarized thin section specimen of NWA 5426. There are two really amazing chondrules you should try to find while viewing the panoramas. NWA 5426 is a R Type Chondrite; “R” symbolizing the type specimen found in Rumuruti, Kenya. According to Norton’s The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites, these R Type Chondrites are mostly brecciated. In the case of NWA 5426, it is a polymict breccia. Of all the chondrites, R Type Chondrites contain the highest levels of iron oxidation.
