Los Angeles 002 Meteorite Thin Section

Nice looking Shergottite thin section displaying colorful geometric grains and other, completely black ones. The Los Angeles Meteorite is a special meteorite due to its circumstantial discovery. Imagine having a Martian rock sitting in your garage without realizing it! There are probably thousands of unclassified meteorites all over the world right now, sitting in peoples gardens, housetops, and rock collections. And Jon Larsen shows in his book, In Search of Stardust that there are micrometeorites literally everywhere around us.

NWA 1950, a poikilitic shergottite, is a Martian treasure for meteorite collectors. The two thin sections presented in this post are stunningly beautiful and were a real joy to photograph. I hope viewers find them visually stimulating. Many of the darkened olivine grains look remarkably similar to those found in NWA 2737; both were formed from high pressure shocks related to the ejecting event. Image One was taken with 4x/0.25 objective while Image Two was taken with 10x/0.25 objective. Additional information:

NWA 11220 Meteorite Thin Section

What a fascinating meteorite! NWA 11220, just like the previously posted NWA 8171, is a Martian Basaltic Breccia. It shares many of the same characteristics and the clasts have similar appearances. In the thin section posted here, readers can explore some eerily “alien” features which seem unique to this particular class of Martian meteorites. The large inclusion on the left side of the thin section contains fascinating little globular specks. Additional clasts contain shapes and features which pose numerous questions, such as what kind of “natural” processes could have formed them? Enjoy!
